IN PURSUIT OF BALANCE
In 1814 a land surveyor noted on a title deed that Stellenzicht was not good for crop farming, as most of it was stony and suited only to grazing. Nature’s gift of an exceptional terroir was yet to be fully appreciated.
We believe that you need to know where you come from, where you are rooted, in order to keep going forward into the future. This is how our version of the traditional Helderberg-blend came about. Cinsault, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon were all grown and harvest together on the slopes of the Helderberg during the 1900’s, creating a unique wine. This heritage of Helderberg blends is shown in a contemporary way through our Thunderstone and Acheulean red blends.
Our ancient sandstone soils have been the backbone of Stellenzicht for hundreds of years. Our history is rooted in these soils, as shown by the presence of Acheulean axes “stone age hand tools” in our vineyards. Our rocky soil is the one thing that has stayed consistent throughout the history of the farm yielding a bounty of excellence each year.
We made history with our exceptional results for our 1994 Stellenzicht Syrah and we’re excited to continue this legacy as we pursue excellence and balance in our range of wines including our estate grown Syrah grapes. Our pride and joy is the block of Syrah vineyards grown from plant material taken from the original block of Syrah that produced our award winning Syrah.
The legend lives on.
