Rooted in Terroir and Refined by Time
The first owner of Stellenzicht in 1692 established a legacy of more than 300 years of winemaking excellence. Since its revival in 2017, Stellenzicht has honoured that legacy by allowing its ancient soils to produce distinct, terroir-driven wines that appeal to both traditional wine lovers and those who prefer a New World style.

Our Values
At Stellenzicht, sustainability, balance, and respect for nature guide everything we do. From regenerative farming to thoughtful winemaking, we are committed to nurturing the land, supporting biodiversity, and crafting wines that truly express our terroir.
The Dragonfly
Dragonflies inspire the Stellenzicht philosophy of balance. Their presence signals a healthy ecosystem, much like our wines reflect the vitality of our vineyards. Following the farm’s rehabilitation in 2017 - with fynbos restored and regenerative farming practices introduced - dragonfly populations flourished across the estate. Highly sensitive to their environment, they thrive only where balance exists. In our constant pursuit of harmony between nature and winemaking, the dragonfly has become a natural symbol of Stellenzicht’s enduring legacy and its terroir-driven wines.
Acheulean Hand Axes
Acheulean hand axes are integral to the Stellenzicht story. When the farm was revived in 2017, its new owner set out to discover what made Stellenzicht truly unique in its long history. Sharp stone objects scattered across the land prompted deeper investigation. An early title deed described the farm as “not good for crops, only cattle, too many rocks,” revealing that the very soils once seen as a limitation are, in fact, ideal for vines. The stones discovered were prehistoric Acheulean tools, crafted by early humans. From this ancient connection, the Acheulean Range was born. Our flagship wines honour the land’s deep history and the earliest human footprints left on Stellenzicht.
Sustainability
As custodians of this beautiful farm, we are committed to protecting our natural resources through sustainable farming practices. These efforts foster a healthy ecosystem that safeguards our dragonfly population and the estate’s rich fauna and flora. This sustainability philosophy guides every aspect of our daily operations as we continually pursue balance. In line with our commitment to sustainable winemaking, we are embracing renewable energy. Our new solar farm powers the estate with 668 panels, delivering a 300 kW production capacity and an estimated annual output of over 600 MWh.
Regenerative Farming
Stellenzicht is home to a contented herd of cattle. Our mission is to honour our commitment to sustainability through regenerative farming practices. Our cattle naturally support the farm’s essential processes in three key ways: they provide effective weed control without the need for chemicals or mechanical mowing in unused blocks; their manure reintroduces vital nutrients to the soil, which we carefully monitor; and strategic grazing enhances the estate’s overall ecological function.
Renewal
In honouring our history and soils, we carefully studied our terroir to plant the right varieties in the right places, giving each vine the best opportunity to thrive. Guided by nature’s indicators, we adapt our sustainable farming and winemaking practices to express our soils as clearly and authentically as possible. Regeneration lies at the heart of Stellenzicht’s revival: vineyards have been replanted, alien vegetation removed, and indigenous flora re-established. The return of fynbos from the Helderberg Mountain has restored biodiversity across the farm, creating balanced ecosystems and wines that are true expressions of our terroir.
Stellenzicht Syrah
We made history with the exceptional results of our 1994 Stellenzicht Syrah, with John Platter noting in his 1997 guide, “…what might become the priciest, most prized modern Cape wine, the Stellenzicht Syrah.” Twenty-five years later, we are excited to continue this legacy as we pursue excellence and balance across our range of wines, including those crafted from our estate-grown Syrah grapes. Our pride and joy is a block of Syrah vineyards grown from plant material taken from the original block of Syrah that produced our award-winning Syrah. The legend lives on.
The Eco Wine Pod
Sustainability and balance lie at the heart of the Stellenzicht philosophy. Through regenerative farming, working in harmony with the terroir, and restoring natural habitats, dragonflies have returned to this mountainside estate outside Stellenbosch. The eco-friendly Wine Pod reflects the same light touch. Raised on crow’s feet without the need for a concrete slab, it integrates seamlessly into the landscape and can be relocated with ease. Made from 80% recyclable materials, it provides natural insulation, reducing energy use during the colder months.
